Ottawa, ON - Following its announcement in the Government of Canada’s Fall Economic Statement, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) welcomes a $10-million investment in the International Convention Attraction Fund (ICAF), strengthening Canada's competitive position in the global business-events market.
"This is a milestone moment for Canada's meetings and conventions sector," says Beth Potter, President and CEO of TIAC. "With this investment, our destinations can aggressively compete for major international events, bringing significant economic benefits to communities across the country."
The investment comes as Canada's tourism industry continues its strong momentum. In 2023, tourism spending reached $113.4 billion, with business events playing a central role in driving economic activity across hotels, venues, restaurants, and local attractions.
ICAF's track record demonstrates the program's remarkable success. In just 21 months, participating destinations have secured 21 international conventions scheduled between 2025 and 2030. These events will bring over 51,000 overnight delegates to Canada, generating $122.2 million in direct economic impact.
"The impact of these events extends far beyond conference centres," notes Potter. "When international delegates visit Canada, they experience our world-class hospitality, explore our destinations, and often return for leisure travel. Many form business connections that lead to investment and trade opportunities."
The program's economic efficiency speaks for itself – every $1 million invested generates $16.4 million in direct economic impact and supports 140 full-time equivalent jobs. This multiplier effect creates opportunities throughout the tourism ecosystem, from hotels and transportation providers to restaurants and local attractions.
As global competition for business events intensifies, this investment positions Canadian destinations to showcase their unique offerings and attract high-value international conventions. TIAC members across the country are ready to welcome these events and demonstrate why Canada is a premier destination for global business gatherings.
