Tackling the labour challenges will involve many strategies. Better utilization of tailored resources and supports, along with adapting business models and improving HR practices will be essential, but not enough. Addressing structural constraints requires an advocacy focus to better align public policy to meet both short-term and long-term labour needs in the tourism sector. This document contains information to help frame the issue and serves as a backdrop to the policy discussions at the Forum. |

Consultation on the Underused Housing Tax | |
The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) appreciates the opportunity to provide its views on the application of the proposed Underused Housing Tax, and more specifically on whether special rules should be established in respect of residential properties located in resort and tourism communities. TIAC believes that special rules are warranted and should be established in respect of residential properties located in resort and tourism communities to ensure that i) every owner of a residential property who offers their properties as short-term vacation rentals be required to file an annual declaration with the Canada Revenue Agency for each such property they own, and ii) all owners of residential property in resort and tourism communities who offer their properties as short-term rentals be subject to the annual Underused Housing Tax. |

In this edition of Navigate, we take a close look at event tourism with a feature on the 2012 Summer Olympics and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Our findings show that 35% of travellers who have visited or plan to visit an Olympic host city were positively influenced by the Games.
