Research + Findings
Canada’s tourism sector plays a vital role in the country’s economy, communities, and visitor experience, but recent emergencies and disruptions have highlighted the growing need for stronger preparedness and resilience across the industry.
Developed through national outreach, stakeholder engagement, and cross-sector collaboration, the Tourism Emergency Preparedness initiative has produced original research and data-driven resources that explore emerging challenges, operational realities, and practical approaches shaping emergency preparedness within Canada’s tourism sector. Together, these resources help industry leaders, operators, and communities better understand evolving risks and opportunities.
Survey Results: Navigating Disruptions and Support Gaps
The Tourism Resilience Survey explores the current state of emergency preparedness across Canada’s tourism sector, with a focus on operational readiness, communication and visitor safety, workforce and organizational capacity, and emergency recovery planning. The findings provide valuable insight into current practices, challenges, preparedness gaps, and emerging priorities. Responses were received from a broad cross-section of the industry with 75% of respondents representing organizations with fewer than 50 employees.
Key Findings Report
The Tourism Emergency Preparedness Key Findings Report brings together a thorough environmental scan of existing domestic and international resources, frameworks, programs, and best practices with insights gained from TIAC’s national survey, discussion forums, and case study interviews to strengthen tourism emergency preparedness across Canada.
The report explores emerging risks, operational realities, and opportunities for better alignment among tourism operators, governments, destination organizations, Indigenous partners, and emergency management professionals, while providing practical analysis and recommendations to help inform future planning, policy, training, and resilience initiatives.
What We Heard Reports
A series of six discussion forums brought together tourism operators, destination organizations, emergency management professionals, Indigenous tourism leaders, and industry partners from across Canada. The resulting “What We Heard” reports capture key themes, insights, and practical considerations shared through these engagements, helping to inform future policy, planning, collaboration, and resource development for tourism emergency preparedness in Canada.
