The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) recently released a report on the challenges and opportunities of mobile payments for the travel and tourism sector.

The report also highlights China as a case study on mobile payments, a topic that is of particular interest to our industry, as China remains Destination Canada's third-largest tourist market and is also the focus of TIAC’s highly popular China Readiness Workshops, which have been successfully delivered to businesses across Canada.

From the WTTC report summary:

With 83% of passengers travelling with mobile devices, these have become an essential part of the travel journey today.

Mobile is well integrated into the modern Travel & Tourism experience: with travellers using apps to arrange a ride to the airport, getting an electronic boarding pass, accessing in-flight entertainment on a mobile device, unlocking their hotel room with a mobile key, looking for what to do and where to eat, and sharing their travel experience on social platforms. In effect, all these travel activities are supported by mobile devices such as a smartphone or tablet.

Mobile payment allows Travel & Tourism providers to remain in contact with travellers throughout their journey, thereby giving companies the opportunity to build customer engagement and ultimately drive higher levels of business growth.
