TIAC participated in a press conference with our industry partners on behalf of the Coalition of Hardest Hit Businesses yesterday, calling on the federal government to protect travel and tourism businesses and their employees in Canada, as the crucial Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) and Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) programs wind down. We need tailored, sector specific support to continue.
 
We know that the unfortunate timing of CEWS and CERS withdrawal, staggered reopening plans and lack of clarity with restrictions are barriers to the revival of our industry. 
 
Yesterday, I also met directly with the Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland. I shared your stories. And she acknowledged the impact that covid-19 has had on our industry. We will continue to connect with the Minister and her office in the days and weeks ahead, and share with them the ongoing impact that closed borders and declining support are having on your businesses.
 
We continue our push to open the borders. With vaccinations rising and case numbers going down, we must now pivot to more forward-thinking policies, and talk about safely reopening the border. We are hopeful that the next round of changes to the border policy will consider what the experts across the country are saying: fully vaccinated people are able to safely move around without quarantine. 
 
TIAC is also actively working to ensure that Canada remains at the global table while new policies and processes are being developed for the traveller journey. I will be presenting to the World Travel and Tourism Council Taskforce this week, sharing insights from Canada and discussing the path forward with tourism leaders from around the world.

Advocacy Update
 
Yesterday, TIAC participated in a press conference with the Coalition of Hardest Hit Businesses calling on the Federal Government to provide continued and tailored financial support for our sectors. This was accompanied by an open letter to Minister Freeland, which can be viewed here.

Travel, Testing and Borders
 
Border restrictions ease
  • Fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents will be able to skip the 14-day quarantine rule upon entry to Canada.
  • Eligible air travellers will also be exempt from the requirement that they spend their first three days in Canada in a government-approved hotel.
  • Travellers are also required to use the ArriveCAN app prior to their departure and must also log vaccination details and negative test results.

Porter Aviation Holding Inc. reaches agreement with Government of Canada
  • Porter Aviation Holdings Inc., the parent company of Porter Airlines, has reached an agreement with the Government of Canada for loans valued at up to $270.5 million.
  • $20.5 million dollars have been allocated for issuing refunds to those who cancelled flights during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The loans are being made available through the federal government’s Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation under the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF).
  • All flights booked by June 30, 2021, for travel as of February 1, 2020, are eligible for refunds.

EU approves entry for Canadians to travel
  • The European Union finalized an agreement on Wednesday that would see Canadians, and individuals from 10 other countries, be allowed to travel to the EU.
  • While Canadians will be free to travel, each EU country can set their own standards, including mandatory quarantines and negative testing.
  • Canada’s approval was based on a significant decline in cases in recent weeks and follows earlier concerns that Canadians who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has not been formally approved by the EU, would be barred from entering.

Ontarians aged 12-17 eligible to book accelerated second dose
  • Ontarians aged 12-17 are able to book an accelerated second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Appointments for second doses for 12- to 17-year-olds opened up on July 5 on the provincial portal, directly through public health units that use their own booking systems, and via participating pharmacies.
  • This change in rollout comes as Ontario’s daily case count is 170, the lowest since September 10.
