TIAC’s Advocacy Update
- Over the past few weeks, TIAC’s Acting CEO, Board Members, Recovery Committee Members and our Provincial and Territorial Industry Association partners have been on the Hill (virtually) advocating for the industry and sharing our recovery plan with MPs and Ministers. Our timing is critical to ensure our industry’s survival, and as we look towards the upcoming federal budget, we are asking for investment and support for the tourism economy. We met with MPs across all parties, including the Prime Minister’s office, to share our sector specific recovery needs and recommendations. Take a look at some of the meetings we have had by visiting TIAC’s Twitter Page.
- In addition, TIAC presented the Recovery Plan to an All Party Tourism Caucus audience last Friday, along with our partners at Destination Canada and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada. We had an outstanding turnout, and this was a critical meeting which outlined the collective agreement across party lines that the tourism industry needs sector specific support, and needs it now.
- To compliment and further our efforts, please get involved and show your support for the industry by sending a letter to your local MP at tourismcounts.ca. Simply enter your postal code, and send!

Government Announcements
Federal Government Announces Extension Rates on CEWS & CERS
- TIAC has been advocating tirelessly for the extension to the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) and Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) programs and we are happy to see some progress and success. Today in Ottawa, the Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland announced that the federal government will extend the subsidy’s current rate to June 2021 and use 2019 as the baseline for the calculation of the subsidy. This is an important win will allow the highly affected businesses in tourism to continue claiming the highest rate of the wage subsidy for the next 3 months.
- While this announcement is very helpful for our sector and allows businesses to plan and forecast, we will keep advocating for changes that are specific to our sector, including extension through Summer 2021 for those hardest hit.
- TIAC and our advocacy team had engaged with the government on this issue including a number of conversations with the Office of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Small-Business. The announcement today is positive news.
