As widely reported by the media, recent events following the arrest of Huawei’s CFO in December continue to create geopolitical tension between China and Canada. As the situation unfolds, TIAC maintains regular contact with Minister Joly’s office as well as Global Affairs Canada (GAC) as government continues to work through these issues.

Timeline of events:

January 9
TIAC hosted a members-only conference call, to provide the latest updates on the on-going situation, while simultaneously seeking industry feedback and concerns regarding actual and perceived impacts from the marketplace.

80 TIAC members participated on the call where representatives from TIAC, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and Destination Canada were on hand to address member concerns. Click here to see the summary notes from the call.

February 5
As part of Hill Days activities, TIAC hosted a Tourism Stakeholders meeting where representatives from Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED), Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and tourism representatives from across Canada discussed a range of issues, including the Canada-China situation.  Among other things, the group exchanged updates and feedback regarding actual and quantifiable impacts the Canada-China situation is having on businesses. Meeting participants agreed to maintain an ongoing dialogue, provide timely updates of any new impacts as the situation unfolds and work together on measures to potentially mitigate impacts. TIAC emphasized the need to address visa reform to facilitate travel from China to Canada.

February 7
TIAC President and CEO Charlotte Bell met with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and a representative from the Canadian Embassy in China to share information and discuss ongoing communication as the situation continues to unfold.  TIAC reiterated the need for visa reform and adequate resources to process visa applicants from China who are now required to provide biometric information in order to enter Canada.

TIAC appreciates that this on-going situation has created uncertainty and concern for the tourism industry. We want to hear from you and will continue to keep you informed of further developments.
